It’s International Sauvignon Blanc Day! Better get celebrating, and how convenient that it falls on a Friday!
Here are 4 interesting facts about Sauvignon Blanc:
1. Sauvignon Blanc is the parent grape to Cabernet Sauvignon.
2. Sauvignon Blanc is the 8th most planted wine producing grape in the world.
3. The herbaceous flavours come from a natural aromatic grape compound called pyrazines, typically found in your more cool climate expression Sauvignons.
4. Sauvignon Blanc can be aged. We at Domaine des Dieux produce an aged Sauvignon Blanc that is still crisp and fresh. Our current vintage you ask, it’s our 2012.
Happy International #SauvignonBlancDay
Come celebrate with us by enjoying free complimentary tasting of our Sauvignon Blancs this weekend at our Tasting Room.
We unleashed Chef Daniel upon Cape Town last month and this is his review of his visit. Warning – not for sensitive readers (Chef has a very particular sense of humour) – Ed.
“I visited the Mont Rochelle wine yard, which is part of Sir Richard Branson’s portfolio. I had a very pleasant visit organised by wine maker Dustin Osborne in Franschhoek and was very impressed with the Mico Premier Range Chardonnay Sur Lie.
I also visited Nico Van der Merwe wines. He is the previous Cellar Master at Saxenburg. Their wine maker philosophy remains traditional (Don’t ask him why he doesn’t use screw caps). I was really impressed with his Mas Nicolas Cape (Cabernet & Shiraz) one of my favourite wines and very impressive, as well as his beautiful Shiraz.
I am basically retired and I don’t cook A La Carte that often any more (my daughter, Anne is the executive chef of La Madeleine and what she’s producing is really amazing – if I may say so myself) so this time allows me to wander the beautiful places of South Africa and abroad to get the best wines and produce on our tables at La Madeleine.
My wife & I have won many awards (especially in Eat out, best Restaurant of the year and six or seven times we made the top ten) so I believe that I have the knowledge and experience to make a few criticisms of what the cuisine I enjoyed in Cape Town.
I had some very good food in some of the top Restaurants in the Cape but compared to European standards – few of them will have a 1-star Michelin in my point of view. I think they should concentrate more on the freshness of local products and avoid serving Foie Gras from tins or to serve scallops (Scallops don’t exist in SA) to try to impress their clientele.
Some have the tendency to lose focus on the product value by covering it with a multitude of herbs and spices so that in the end – you don’t recognise what you are eating. I have always believed that it is better to keep the preparation and plating simpler.
I haven’t yet been to the famous Restaurant in Paternoster and I am looking forward to see what they can produce. In my opinion the only Restaurant who could get maybe 2 stars, is a restaurant outside Pretoria on the way to Hartbeespoort Dam.
I had a nice walk in Camps Bay and Clifton, what a beautiful place and I was so delighted not to see one single poster of a certain son of the soil like you see every 10 meters in Lynnwood Road – I really had a beautiful feeling that I was outside of South Africa during my time in Cape Town.”
